"My name is Adriaan Kruger. I'm a quadriplegic living with a C5/C6 neck injury that left me paralyzed at the age of 17. The injury occurred on September 27, 1990, during a touch rugby game at Frans du Toit High School in Phalaborwa.
Despite the challenges, I've built a fulfilling career as a Switchboard Controller at Foskor Pty Ltd, a leading producer of phosphate-based products.
I'm reaching out because I urgently need to replace my unreliable vehicle, which is my lifeline to independence and employment. Unfortunately, my current vehicle is no longer trustworthy, and I cannot risk traveling far or relying on others for transportation.
To maintain my independence, I require a wheelchair-friendly vehicle with an under-vehicle wheelchair lift. A Volkswagen Transporter Crewbus is ideal for my needs, but it's become unaffordable.
This is where I humbly ask for your support. I've created this page to raise funds for a reliable, wheelchair-accessible vehicle. Your contribution will significantly impact my life, enabling me to continue working and living independently.
Thank you for considering my story and supporting my fundraiser.
"My current vehicle, a 2011 VW Transporter Crewbus, has been my reliable companion for years, but it's starting to show its age with almost 190,000km on the clock. Unfortunately, its engine suffered a major setback when the headgasket blew a few years ago.
"We were devastated when a mechanic we hired to fix the issue took our money and disappeared without completing the repairs. Thankfully, a family member with mechanical expertise stepped in to help, and I was able to get back to work.
"However, the vehicle's reliability has been a concern ever since. Its age and mileage make it increasingly prone to breakdowns, which would leave me stranded and unable to get to work."
I'll never forget the day my life changed forever. It was 34 years ago, during a touch rugby game in PT class, when I was just 17 years old. One of my friends fell on me, pushing my head between my legs, and I landed on my back, unable to move.
"The ambulance rushed me to the hospital, where I faced a long and challenging journey. My heart stopped beating, and I suffered from severe lung infections twice, complicated by my allergy to penicillin. The delayed vertebrae fusion operation in my neck only added to my struggles.
"After five months in the hospital, I finally returned home, permanently paralyzed from my chest down with limited wrist function and no finger or triceps function. Despite these challenges, I was determined to rebuild my life.
"With the support of my loving parents, I started my own business, which unfortunately had to be sold due to unforeseen circumstances. I got married, but unfortunately, it ended in divorce seven years later. Throughout these experiences, my wheelchair became an integral part of my daily life.
"Today, I'm proud to say that I've been working as a Switchboard Controller at a mining company for over 11 years. I'm grateful for my parents' unwavering support, which has enabled me to achieve so much despite my physical limitations.
"My story is one of resilience, hope, and determination. I've learned to adapt and thrive in a world that often seems designed for the able-bodied. I'm proud of who I am and what I've accomplished, and I hope that my story can inspire others to face their own challenges with courage and perseverance."
"I'm grateful for the support of The Players' Fund, a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO), which has assisted me significantly since my rugby accident 34 years ago. They've provided me with essential wheelchairs and assistive devices, and I'm thankful for their kindness.
"To help me reach my goal of acquiring a reliable, wheelchair-accessible vehicle, I'm collaborating with The Players' Fund. They've generously assisted me with a Donation Proposal Request letter.

"I'm reaching out with a sincere request, and I understand it may seem daunting. However, I'm left with no choice. My father, who has selflessly driven me to work at Foskor since 2012, recently lost his right leg at the age of 80. To ensure his safety and comfort, I urgently need an automatic Volkswagen Transporter with a wheelchair lift.
"The current vehicle is unreliable, and breakdowns are frequent. With my father's age and health, we cannot afford to be stranded. Your assistance would be invaluable in helping me maintain my independence, which is paramount to me.
"I'm determined to avoid being confined to a care facility, relying on others for daily needs. Your support would enable me to continue living life on my own terms, pursuing my ambitions, and contributing to society.
"I understand this is a significant request, but I believe it's not impossible. Your help would mean the world to me and my parents. Thank you for considering my plea. Your generosity would be a beacon of hope in our lives."
